A longer term view of energy

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

I would like to begin this article with a simple plea.

Power My Home PV Solar Panels UKThe terms alternative energy, micro-generation and green energy doesn’t inspire one or cut the mustard. A better way to describe solar panels, wind turbines and other similar technologies would be self-generation technologies.

These phrases used within our industries, are doing us a disservice because they demean, belittle and merely paint an incorrect picture of the benefits which these types of systems provide. (more…)

Iran could cause an energy crunch

Saturday, December 10th, 2011

Could Iran cause an energy crunch? It’s been said that the line between order and disorder is the thin blue line of the law. I would also like to enhance this saying by exchanging the word line for the pipeline.

Power My Home PV Solar Panels UKThe pipeline concerned is the one carrying oil supplies from Iran, on which, over the last decade, European countries such as Spain, Italy and Greece have become very dependent.

These countries also have to deal with the fact that their ailing economies are dependent on this risky and possibly unstable state, with other European and British communities facing problems too if these countries’ economies fail.

The golden age of civilisation

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011

Ask a thousand people of varying ages, and you will get a thousand different answers, but what everyone will all agree on is that the golden age was in the past.

Sunrise or sunset for the industry?

Sunrise or sunset for the industry?

Watching a program from the mid-1990’s (the Adam & Joe Show), one of their comedy sketches consisted of trying to claim the free extra offers you got with food products – the 25% additional free offers which were commonplace in those days.

The significance of giving away food or products in those times, that our older people remember, but didn’t appreciate at the time, suddenly struck me. (more…)

Independence for home energy

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

The coalition government’s latest ‘comprehensive energy review’ which held this week, came up with the one undoubtedly obvious conclusion.

New home energy generation with PV solar panels.

New home energy generation with PV solar panels.

That there was nothing that the last government could do, nor that this state or even the next government can do to stop our energy bills from rising.

Mr Cameron’s assessment of energy prices only confirmed that our great nation is powerless against global issues, including the overwhelming global demand for energy as the industrialised economies of China and India continue to grow.

This predicament is overshadowed alarmingly by the continued reduction of new oil field finds and the overstretching of existing areas. New investment into looking for new oil fields has been announced this week, with BP casting their the North Sea nets out further afield. (more…)

Preventing the energy crunch

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

Did you know that the bankers’ bailout in 2008/9 was the direct cause of the Arab Spring protests in the Middle East? The bail-out money that the banks received during this period was sunk into the commodities markets, mainly food commodities.

Power My Home PV Solar Panels UKThe result was higher global food prices, and Middle Eastern countries bore the brunt of these actions. The saying “every action reacts” is appropriate here, with ordinary people taking to the streets, blaming their governments for not being able to afford their basic needs.

While the Middle Eastern governments were powerless to prevent food prices and food shortages from affecting their people, so too is our government equally impotent to avert global issues from affecting citizens of the UK. (more…)

The UK’s energy bills now hit £1000

Friday, October 7th, 2011

Today in the UK, a significant milestone has reached now that the cheapest gas and electricity combination tariff for UK homes has hit £1,000 per annum, after above-inflation price rises by the big six energy suppliers.

Power My Home PV Solar Panels UKThe highest energy bills on record come as 3 out of 10 householders admit that they are struggling to afford even their necessary energy costs. The golden age of cheap energy is over.

Unfortunately, 8 out of 10 householders will be forced to start rationing their home’s energy use by managing without adequate heating, according to a survey of 2,300 people. This situation comes at a time when this year’s winter is predicted to be harsh. (more…)
